Nigeria Releases 119 Detainees Charged with Treason Over High Living Costs Protests

Actualité

Nigeria recently released 119 people, including 40 minors, who had been detained on charges of treason related to anti-government protests over the high cost of living. The protesters, initially arraigned in August, were charged with offenses such as treason and incitement of a military coup, with some charges carrying the death penalty. However, following a directive by President Bola Tinubu, the attorney general took over the case, ultimately dropping the charges and securing their release.

The minors’ detention and treatment raised concerns when videos circulated of them appearing weak, malnourished, and even fainting in court, prompting public outcry. The footage intensified scrutiny of police conditions and sparked calls from politicians and activists, including Peter Obi, for better treatment and fair handling of minors in custody. Civil society groups are now urging state governments to rehabilitate and compensate the released minors for the physical and emotional toll of their detainment.
