Senegal Cracks Down on Skin-Lightening and Butt Enhancement Products Over Health Risks

Actualité

Senegalese authorities have launched a major crackdown on the sale of harmful cosmetic products, including skin-lightening creams and butt-enhancement treatments, following reports of severe health complications linked to their use. Among those detained is Alima Sow, popularly known as “Alima Suppo,” a prominent vendor of butt-enhancement products, along with three of her associates and several other sellers. They are scheduled to appear in court as part of an ongoing investigation into the distribution of these dangerous products, which have been associated with life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks and sudden deaths.

The crackdown has now expanded to include sellers of skin-lightening products, with authorities targeting well-known figures in the industry. One such individual is “Mame Ndiaye Savon,” a famous vendor of bleaching creams and soaps, who is under investigation after online medical platforms highlighted the risks associated with these products.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the widespread use of unregulated cosmetic products in Senegal, many of which contain harmful chemicals that pose serious health risks. Authorities are intensifying efforts to curb the sale and distribution of these items, aiming to protect public health and raise awareness about the dangers of using such products.

This decisive action reflects Senegal’s commitment to addressing the health crisis caused by the unregulated cosmetic industry, as well as its determination to hold accountable those who profit from the sale of hazardous goods.
