Ecowas Adjusts Plans Amid Concerns: Togo Visit Altered Due to Constitutional Changes

Actualité

Leaders from the West African regional bloc, Ecowas, have decided to change their plans to visit Togo because of the serious concerns about the government’s proposed changes to the constitution.

Originally, they said they were going to Togo for a specific reason, but then they changed their minds. They released a statement on Monday, but then deleted it on Tuesday.

They released a new statement saying that the visit was just to gather information and that they would not be involved in any other activities. They had to take back their previous statement because it was wrong.

The opposition in Togo is against the new constitution that the government wants to introduce. They believe it is a way for President Faure Gnassingbé to stay in power for longer.

The changes would switch Togo from a system where the president has a lot of power to one where the parliament has more power. But the opposition thinks this is just a trick to keep President Gnassingbé, who is already in his fourth term, in charge.

Ecowas has been trying to help countries in West Africa that have had military takeovers to go back to having democratic governments. But their recent efforts have not been successful.
